GlossaryWe admit - there's a lot of "lingo" attached to the web. We try as much as possible to keep this under control, but every now and then these little 3-letter words slip in there. Maybe you're a whiz and already know all this stuff. If not, here are some brief explanations. If you need more information, please contact us and we'll be happy to explain what these options can - or cannot - do for you. POP email This is a dedicated mailbox at your domain. You would typically access this mailbox using an email "client" such as Outlook or Entourage. Each of your employees can have their own dedicated inbox. Most plans come with a sufficient number of free POP accounts, but if you've used these all up, then you might need some extra. (Note that we also offer a free alternative called an "alias") See Also: Email Alias Email Forwards A "Forward" can send email for one address to a totally different location. So for instance, you could have "mom@mydomain.com", but this would send email to her home email account or a free Hotmail address. See Also: Email Alias Extra POP email account This is an extra "mailbox" at your domain. So if you currently have tom@jones.com you could add frank@jones.com, which could receive email completely separately from your main mailbox. You can use this to add a mailbox for your staff, your spouse or your mother-in-law's aunt. Most plans come with a number of free POP accounts, but if you've used these all up, then you might need some extra. (Note that we also offer a free alternative called a "forward". More details on our Email Only plan page) See Also: Email Forwards Email Alias An "Alias" is a made-up email address that delivers email to one of your real POP mail accounts. So for instance you could have "info@mydomain.com" listed on your business card, but this would deliver email to your "jane@mydomain.com" inbox. See Also: Email Forwards Extra Disk Space Accounts have a default maximum amout of online storage. If you consistently find yourself getting "over quota" emails from us, or you'd like to use some space for online storage, consider adding this option to your normal plan. Note that there will be a monthly charge for repeatedly going over your disk space quota. extra bandwidth Also known as "data transfer", bandwidth refers to the amount of information downloaded from or uploaded to your website. All plans come with a set default bandwidth quota that should be enough for most websites. If you consistently find yourself getting "over quota" emails from us, or you plan on taking out a full-page advert in the New York Times to advertize your new website, you might want to consider adding some extra bandwidth to your normal plan. Note that there will be a monthly charge for repeatedly going over your babdwidth quota. Web-based Control Panel A control panel is the complete management tool for your web hosting account. Features typically include: adding and deleting accounts, sub-domains, and purchasing additional services for your account. In addition, statistical bar graphs show how much disk allocation, FTP and HTTP transfer has been consumed, along with how much space / transfer is left. Every account management tool, including billing and support, is typically completed through this type of control panel. SSI (Server Side Includes) SSI is a type of HTML command that is a powerful tool for web developers. This command directs the web server to dynamically generate data for the website upon request. In addition, SSI can be used to execute programs and insert results into the website. Pages with SSI have extensions that end with “.shtml”. This filename extension enables the web server to differentiate those pages that need to be processed before being sent to the browser. FrontPage Extensions Microsoft FrontPage extensions allow you to add some dynamic features to your websites, as well as manage your site's content with a graphical tool. If you wish to publish your FP site, you can use the interface from the program and click "Publish." Your site will be online as soon as you have finished. No knowledge of FTP or uploading is required. With FrontPage, publishing a website is easier than ever before. SQL Server SQL Server is Microsoft's enterprise-level database program. A database allows you to generate web pages dynamically based on user input. You might use one to allow people to search your stock catalog, or to collect information from your visitors. Your web designer or developer would typically let you know if you need this. SilverType can also help you develop dynamic data-driven applications. FTP is the method commonly used for this. If you use a program such as Dreameweaver or FrontPage, these contain their own upload functions. On a Mac you may be familiar with Fetch, a common FTP client. Other programs for both Mac and Windows can be found on our "Support" page in the Tools section. |
